Joe Carter

Joseph Chris Carter (born March 7, 1960) is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as an outfielder and first baseman for the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, and San Francisco Giants. Carter first excelled in baseball at Wichita State, which saw him bat .430 in three seasons and played with the team in their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament in 1980.

Carter was selected as the second overall pick in the 1981 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs. After spending two years in the minor leagues, he made his major league debut in 1983 but played in just 23 games before eventually being part of the trade to Cleveland that sent Rick Sutcliffe to Chicago. In the 1986 season, he led the American League in runs batted in (RBI) with 121 while having the first of twelve seasons with at least twenty home runs.

Carter was subject to two trades in the span of a year that saw him play with San Diego in 1990 and Toronto in 1991, with the latter being the team he ultimately played nearly half of his career with. In seven seasons with the team, he was named to the All-Star Game five times and won his two Silver Slugger Awards in 1991 and 1992. Carter recorded the final out in the 1992 postseason run that saw the Blue Jays win their first ever championship.
